Service Description

PERSONAL NARRATIVE WORKSHOP, Easter 2024 Arles, Provence, France – since times immemorial famous for the softness of its light and its attractiveness to painters and visual artists. Gauguin, Picasso, van Gogh, all worked here and you will easily understand their reasons. Arles and the surrounding small towns among olive groves and lavender fields. The pace of life is slow here, savoir-vivre is the guiding principle and you will find yourself rather being than doing. The photographer translates this place into a language of personal narrative images. You will leave here with a wealth of new work and new inspiration. Together we explore why we make images and how they get/stay in tune with who we are deep down. There will be plenty of assignments and reviews of our individual work and I am confident you will leave this workshop with a better notion of what your genuine, authentic, creative task is and how to go about its realization. Before the beginning of the workshop I will ask you to send me a collection (up to 12 images) of your work, whether it's a coherent portfolio or a selection of “best of”. I will also ask to send a few images that inspire you and that you wish you had taken yourself. I also like to learn about your favorites in poetry and music to get to know my students a bit before we meet. We get together in our “class room” (mostly in small cafes or venerable old hotels) in the morning and evening for some lively conversation about and review of our day's work. Most of the day will be spent shooting and editing. I recommend individual exploration instead of traipsing around the place in a distracted group. This workshop is for all levels since it is not about technique but VISION. You are welcome to use any device for your image making, whether it is a phone or the latest, fancy DSLR model. The students are in charge of all costs for travel, transportation, accommodations, insurance and food. Models can be provided if you need them for your work. I can help you find good places to stay (hotels or AirBnB). For any interested student I can provide a reading list to get you in the mood .. As far as traveling is concerned: Paris Charles de Gaulle airport is about a seven hour flight from the east coast of the US. Then there are direct, high speed trains from the airport to Arles. Renting a car to visit neighboring places of interest is no problem in Arles. Contact Details: + 207-592-3100 Ralph.Hassenpflug@gmail.com
